How to Erase and Reset a MacBook Before Selling

Identify the Mac before erasing
Record the model, screen size, chip, memory and storage from About This Mac or System Information. Keep this information privately for your quote. “MacBook Pro” alone is not enough to identify a configuration.
Confirm that the Mac belongs to you and is not still managed by an employer or school. Ask the organization to release its management association; reinstalling macOS is not a substitute for that release.
Check your backup on another device
A backup is useful only if you can retrieve what you need. Verify documents, photo libraries and project files, and make sure your new computer can access email, password managers and required software. Move any local-only files that were never synced. Keep recovery keys and codes secure.
Use the erase method for your system
Apple’s Mac erase guide explains the supported paths. On current macOS, use System Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Erase All Content and Settings. On Monterey, open System Preferences, then choose Erase All Content and Settings from its menu bar. The feature requires Apple silicon or a T2 chip and Monterey or later.
If that option is unavailable, use the alternative procedure linked in Apple’s guide rather than improvising a drive format. Follow prompts for account sign-out and activation. Once setup appears, shut down and leave it for the next owner.
Before packing the MacBook
Check that Find My/account locks and organization management are resolved. Never include your login password or Apple Account password in the package. If the Mac cannot be erased or activated, ask support before sending it.
Inspect the charger and device for damage. Do not mail a swollen or overheating battery under an ordinary shipping label; seek manufacturer or specialist guidance.
