Start with safety and ownership
Confirm that you own the device and can authorize its transfer. Resolve a school, work or family ownership question before trying to sell or donate it. Check for physical battery damage; a swollen, leaking or overheating device needs manufacturer or specialist guidance.
Do not charge a damaged device just to see if a buyer will quote it. Do not use an ordinary mailing label when the battery condition requires special handling.

You can choose different routes for different items. A laptop used for an occasional essential task is different from an unsupported phone nobody wants.
If you keep it, give it a job
