The quick answer

Set up and test the replacement before erasing the old phone. Confirm files, calls, texts, email, banking and authenticator access, then secure recovery methods. Only after those checks should you remove account locks, erase the old device and prepare it for sale.

Good to know.

  • A completed backup does not prove every account is accessible.
  • Move authentication access before removing the old device.
  • Never send passwords, SIM PINs or recovery codes with a sale.

Stage 1: inventory what depends on the old phone

List the phone number, primary email, password manager, banking apps, work/school sign-in, authenticator apps and any local-only files. Include messaging apps whose backups work differently from the phone’s general backup.

Check that you know the account passwords and have recovery options you can access without this phone. Keep recovery codes private and stored separately. Do not assume that copying app icons also transfers their sign-in credentials.

Stage 2: back up and set up the replacement

Complete a backup using the supported method for your device, then transfer or restore to the replacement. For an iPhone handover, use Apple’s official preparation guidance. For other devices, follow the manufacturer’s current instructions.

Before you proceed, open a few important files, a recent photo and your contacts on the replacement. Check an item that was stored locally, not only cloud content you could access from any browser. If something is missing, keep the old phone intact while you investigate.

Stage 3: move the number and verify communication

Follow your carrier’s transfer instructions for the physical SIM or eSIM. Test an outgoing call, an incoming call, a text and mobile data. Confirm any messaging-service transition when moving between platforms.

Do not delete the old cellular plan simply because the new phone has Wi-Fi. Carrier support may be needed if transfer fails. Keep access to the old device until the number and essential communication work where you need them.

Stage 4: prove account recovery works

Sign in to your primary email and password manager first, then banking, work/school and other important services. Follow each authenticator app’s supported transfer or restore process; some accounts require registration again.

Use a real test sign-in or the service’s documented recovery check. Never give a buyer a one-time code to “verify” the device. For organization accounts, ask the IT team before deleting the old authenticator registration. Resolve any failed account before erasing the only device that can still approve a login.

Stage 5: prepare the old phone for its next owner

After the replacement works, unpair connected accessories where applicable, remove account associations and use the official erase procedure. See our iPhone or Android guide. Leave the old device at setup and remove personal physical SIM or removable memory cards.

If it cannot be erased, do not assume it contains no data. Contact the intended buyer before shipment. GadgetRenu does not accept Activation-Locked phones even though non-working phones can be eligible.

Frequently asked questions

Can I erase the old phone as soon as the backup finishes?

Verify the replacement and important accounts first. A backup alone does not prove every app or sign-in method transferred.

Should I include my passcode to help inspection?

No. Do not ship passwords, device passcodes or recovery codes. Ask support if a device cannot be prepared.
